It has no target identification meter, but it does have a very decent discrimination control and reasonably good depth for it's price. In an air test I was able to detect a US penny at 7 inches away from the search coil, and that again is quite remarkable for the amount of money I invested buying it. I own about 20 other metal detectors, some costing as much as $1000. I was a detector repairman during the 80's, and I have used nearly every metal detector on the retail market in the last 30 years. I would recommend this detector as the very best starter detector to be found, and as for myself, I plan to use it too, especially in gravel or dirt parking lots where it seems to shine. The search rod is barely long enough for me at 6'1", but it is adequate. The housing is well made and sturdy, although the rear armrest is a little inadequate in that it does not always stop it from pulling away from my forearm as I swing it. But that could be easily remedied with a lightweight strap of some kind. I think I got a real good deal with this detector. It is a very nice little detector.
