I first got into inline skating as a teen in the mid-to-late 1990s, when the skate to get if you played hockey or just wanted something with serious performance was the Rollerblade Lightning TRS. It was a tough skate that you could get some serious speed with, and once your foot formed to the boot the level of agility you could achieve was very satisfying. This was the pair I owned since then, because my foot didn't really grow much since then. Well, a couple of weeks ago, the locking strap on one of my Lightning TRS skates broke. Bummer. I could have kept going with this pair if this hadn't happened.
The worst part was that since then, it seems that inline skating has taken something of a dive in popularity, and I could not find any stores that sold high-quality skates in my area. This made me feel strange, because I feel that a skate is something you should try on before purchasing. Plus, I wasn't sure exactly what skates were out there that would give me the same lovely and exciting skating experience as my Lightning TRS. I know I couldn't go wrong with the Rollerblade brand, but I was still unsure which exact skate to get. After doing some research and finding out about the newest line of TRS skates at the Rollerblade web site, I decided that the New Jack 2 was the closest in the bunch to a true successor to the Lightning TRS of old. I decided to take my best guess on the size and take the plunge, hoping I would love them as much as my research led me to believe I would.
I couldn't have been more right. This is an incredible skate. It's extremely well-built, handles very well due to excellent construction and a small-but-wide wheel size. You can get some SERIOUS speed on these, and if you wear them nice and tight they feel like an extension of your foot. Beginners beware, though: There's no brake, so you'd better know how to stop without one before you buy these. Best of all, the boot is highly comfortable and designed more like a shoe than my old skates. I really don't know that much about all the technical details about the skates but I've been inline skating for a long time and I know what feels great if you like aggressive skates. These also look great, with a more simplified design than last year's New Jack skates, which some design elements that were kind of cheesy in my opinion.
If you want a high-quality inline skate, Rollerblade is your brand and these New Jack 2 skates are both affordable and satisfying. Don't buy one of those no-name brands from one of the big box stores, and don't get Rollerblade's Bladerunner brand (I've tried 'em. They don't compare for the serious skater). Spend the little extra and get one of the TRS line, with this model getting my highest recommendation for its combination of price and quality. Whether you're on a budget or not, you'll love this pair.
