Owner Reviews, Ratings, Comments and Criticism I purchased this cabinet because I needed a secure place to store a few guns. While it certainly can't compare to a proper gun safe, it was only about a third the price. Plus it was going up two flights of stairs which unless you pay for delivery and set up is going to be a recipe for disaster with a 250 pound safe. The cabinet weighs about 70 pounds, so it is easy for one or two people to manage.
The overall quality of the cabinet is good. It's made from a light gauge steel with a piano type hinge in the door. The key operates three lugs at the top, bottom and side of the door. I was concerned that with no handle, it would be difficult to operate, but it is very smooth with no binding in the mechanism. It locks very solid. There is a small plastic shelf and scalloped plastic supports included to help hold the guns in place. It also includes hex head bolts so that the cabinet can be secured to the wall or floor. This is an absolutely necessary feature because with it's relatively small footprint and light weight, the cabinet can be easily moved or knocked over. However with the bolts screwed into a wall stud, the whole thing is very secure.
Okay, so now for a few gripes. The cabinet is supposed to hold 14 guns. Unless you're talking about Red Ryder BB guns, the real number is more like 8 or 10. The picture shows guns set along the back and sides of the cabinet, but most people will just stack them against the back.
The so called shelf is a terrible design. It doesn't extend to the back of the cabinet, so that anything you place on it can be pushed off the back of the shelf and onto your guns and the bottom of the cabinet. I cut a 1x12 board to size and used a few L brackets to make a proper shelf.
My biggest gripe though is with the gun supports or brackets. They have to be installed and while the cabinet is pre-drilled for them, the mounts are positioned only for full length rifles and shotguns. I had to drill holes and mount the brackets lower to accommodate a carbine and short barrel shotgun. It's not a big deal, but they should have drilled the extra holes at the factory.
You basically get what you pay for with something like this. If you have a rare gun collection or live where burglars carry big hammers and heavy pry bars, you should buy a safe. However if you only need a secure place to keep your guns out of the hands of unauthorized people or casual thieves, this Stack On cabinet is a good American made product with a only a few minor issues.
BTW, I payed a good bit less for mine than the present advertised price, so I would shop around.
