Owner Reviews, Ratings, Comments and Criticism
I like this flashlight. It is a great combination of: price, amount of light, hours of usable light, easy to find batteries and small size. Yes, there are brighter lights out there that use a single AA, but they cost wayyy more. The good: a) Light output is a decent 35 lumens. Brighter than a 2AA regular bulb Maglite, but not quite as intense as the 2AA LED Maglite. b) Uses a tail cap switch, great for one-hand operation. c) Just on and off functions. No blink or dim or etc. To me, this is just fine. Sometimes multiple functions just "get in the way". d) Has a several small lanyard holes. e) Comes with a pocket clip which can clip on a hat brim for a headlamp. At first I gave this feature little credit, but have found it to be extremely useful when no one else can help hold a light! f) The rubber cover on the tail cap switch glows in the dark (after being exposed to light). g) Lasts for at least 6 continuous hours on a single AA battery. Although light output does diminish somewhat as the battery is used. This light lasts a long time on a dying battery. For you fellow flashlight geeks, I performed this test: My house smoke alarm started chirping one day and I changed the AA batteries. But I tried the "dead" AA battery in this Nebo flashlight. The flashlight gave an impressive amount of light, considering it was an almost worthless battery. The battery measured 0.8 volts and gave about 20 lumens. While 20 lumens isn't intense task lighting, is sure beats no light at all in a roadside emergency. 20 lumens is just a smidge dimmer than a 2AA regular bulb Maglite using 2 AA's at full charge (1.5 volts). I tried this dead battery in a few other flashlights and they gave such feeble light they were unusable. This Nebo's usefulness on a diminished battery was impressive to me. Life doesn't always give you optimal batteries. h) Rugged aluminum construction. Can take rain, mild abuse and dropping it. I haven't tested dunking or extreme abuse. i) Bumpy rubber grip helps you grasp it when wet or with gloves. j) Unit does not get warm when left on for hours like higher lumen lights can.The bad or good depending on your view: a) The front of the aluminum case is sharpened into three scalloped edges. These flashlight edges ARE pretty sharp. This is called a "Self-Defense Edge" by manufacturers. Many new aluminum flashlights today are coming with this. There appears to be strong and diverging opinions on the effectiveness of this feature. At the end of the day it is up to you. To me, for glove box occasional use, I ranked it as low priority and thought it would end up hurting me inadvertently more than anything. I filed mine down because I didn't want it scratching stuff in my glove box, etc.UPDATE on July 2011: Added Con b) I've had this a few months now and there have been a few times when I used this light that the switch didn't work perfectly. The light flickered and dimmed. I could sometimes correct the issue if I pressed the switch slightly/etc. This has been infrequent, so it hasn't been a big deal (yet).BTW, I highly suspect the LED and circuit are identical to this sister model by the same company. I reviewed it too, and it gave similar light output performance: CSI LUMA Flashlight - Assorted Colors
