The lower Colorado is flat, no rapids, about like a flat lake with a 3-4mph current. Two of the paddles broke, and were carried downstream. No rocks, no brush, just flat water with normal use. The paddles are flat, and would not grip the water, could no propel the canoes with any efficiency. A slightly curved paddle is much better to grip the water.
