It limits the forward and downward movement of the shoulders to prevent slouching. Elastic side panels give cool compression and stabilization to the abdominal and lumbar regions and overlap to contour the body for an adjustable, customized fit. Also features two flexible plastic stays, adjustable elastic shoulder straps, and soft materials. I have had this product for several months now. I bought it with the intent of improving my posture to decrease pain in my lower back and neck area. Overall, I found it met my expectations. Two adjustable straps fasten via Velcro. The first, which is the wider one, is used to keep the device in place. The second, which is narrow, controls the amount of tension used to pull the shoulders back. The product does not limit movement at all. In fact, I have worn it in bed while sleeping overnight with no discomfort. The only complaint I have is that, having a flabby midriff, the larger strap tends to curl over. In addition, depending upon hip size, the product will slip from the originally placed position. I would not hesitate in buying another one at the point the one I have no longer functions correctly (e.g., Velcro not fastening, etc.)
