Each time I'd roll my ankle (usually after jumping and then coming down on somebody else's foot) I'd be out of commission for at least 2-3 weeks. And, of course, in extreme pain. I saw another guy wearing the ASO ankle brace at the gym one day and decided to give it a try. Unlike many other braces which use rigid pieces of plastic to try and keep your ankle from rolling (and consequently are very uncomfortable and limiting for movement), the ASO brace mimics your natural muscles and tendons by wrapping around your ankle (in both directions) so that it is virtually impossible to have a major ankle sprain. And unlike neoprene "sleeves", the ASO brace provides actual injury prevention. The feeling is nice and "firm", kind of like when you buckle into a seatbelt. You feel very stable, but your ankle is still fairly flexible. The only downside is that it does take a couple minutes to lace them up and wrap/attach the velcro straps. But that's a tiny price to pay for the benefits. There's a final big strap that comes across the front of your ankle that hides all the laces and straps so it almost looks like a black sock. I've been wearing the ASO braces on both my ankles for several years now, and the real test comes whenever I encounter an "ankle roll" situation. With the ASO braces, the severity of any ankle roll is dramatically diminished. At least once a week, I step on somebody's foot or step awkwardly, and where I would normally have been in extreme pain... nothing happens. The braces keep my ankle from rolling and I keep on playing. For those extreme cases where I jump and come down on somebody's ankle, the ASO braces make what would have beeen an excruciating injury and make it a minor tweak. About 50% of the time, I can keep playing and my ankle is just a little sore for a few days. The other 50% of the time, I have to stop for the day and take a couple days off. But I no longer have the searing pain from a total ankle roll that almost makes you pass out. Bottom line: The ASO braces have helped me to keep playing basketball, which I love.
